Runners’ Secret Revealed
Before your run, an apple is a light snack (usually about 100 calories) that’s packed with pre-run benefits. Each apple contains sugars and starch (aka carbohydrates) to fuel your cells. One little Ambrosia can give you the boost of energy you need on your run – or to get you out the door for your run! If you don’t like to eat and run, don’t worry. The sugar found in an apple is fructose. Unlike cane sugar, Fructose is slow to metabolize. That means, you’ll experience sustained energy over the course of about an hour – not a big energy spike like you do with sugar. That should keep you running steadily through the kilometres.
The benefits don’t end when you hang up your running shoes. Ambrosia apples are also great for runner recovery. Apples contain quercetin, a flavonoid antioxidant which acts as an anti-inflammatory to ensure you recover faster. Ambrosia apples are also a good source of soluble fibre. Studies have shown that this is an excellent natural anti-inflammatory agent. With the one-two punch of quercetin and soluble fibre, your muscles will feel less sore after your run and they’ll recover quicker too.
Not only that, but soluble fibre and quercetin also help to boost your immune system. As many runners know, running can wear you down. This extra boost will help keep you feeling healthy and reaching for your sneakers instead of a tissue.
Runner’s World Magazine looked at the value of apples for runner endurance and found some interesting studies with regards to increased oxidation in the muscles. Check it out if you want to see some of the science behind this.
For us, we’re just happy to give runners a good reason to enjoy a yummy and nutritious Ambrosia apple – pre or post run.
